Released April 8, the movie “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” made $70 million in its opening weekend. The film’s predecessor made $58 million in its opening weekend, marking this a very successful sequel indeed.
The movie starts with a plot similar to the first film. Set eight months after the first movie, Sonic (Ben Schwartz) wants to prove he is a hero. He soon has that chance as Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) escapes Mushroom Island and returns. We are introduced to two fan favorites from the video game: Knuckles (Idris Elba), and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey). Knuckles is on the doctor’s side, and it is up to Sonic and Tails to work together to defeat him once more.
After the success of the first film in 2020, the sequel was bolder and noticeably more authentic to the video game, an element many found missing from the first movie. While the first movie is about a lonely Sonic finding his place on Earth, this sequel challenges that by forcing the character to slow down and think of others.
Carrey, who returned in his role as Dr. Robotnik, has recently announced that this movie is likely his last before retirement, according to Screen Rant. His acting was pleasantly unhinged as Dr. Robotnik, which is everything we expect from him.
James Marsden’s screen time is noticeably less as this movie focuses more on the animated characters and their nemesis, Dr. Robotnik. This exposed the movie to a broader audience including gamers and families.
Hitting the box-office as the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2022, there are many more excited fans eagerly awaiting the next movie. The production for the third movie is already in the works with more characters hinted to be included.
