Planned Parenthood is known as one of the nation’s greatest provider of sex education that offers services for sexually transmitted infections and diseases, contraception, abortion, and cancer screening and prevention. Abortion covers only 3% of total services provided, but its controversiality has threatened the defunding of Planned Parenthood altogether.
In a series of undercover videos recorded by the Center for Medical Progress, an anti-abortion group, several interviews with Planned Parenthood employees discuss organ procurement and operations involved when aborting a fetus. It was later revealed that many of the videos were heavily edited and taken out of context, but this didn’t stop Texas officials from raiding several clinics and pressing them to release confidential parent and billing records.
With Planned Parenthood in the limelight once again, the debate of abortion arises. The videos are undoubtedly heartbreaking and gruesome, with their vivid descriptions and disturbing images, but they have no basis in truth. The filmmaker himself revealed that most of the videos were edited and that several images and videos of supposedly soon-to-be harvested fetuses were not directly from a Planned Parenthood clinic. Apparently, the images were to be used for “illustrative purposes” but are clearly not tied to Planned Parenthood.
Even though the videos are not credible, coming from an organization that aims to stop abortions, Republicans are attempting to defund Planned Parenthood. Refusing to pass any legislation that would fund Planned Parenthood without a full investigation is horribly unjustified.
Planned Parenthood offers so much more than abortion. America needs to realize that federal funding pays for necessary services other than abortion.
By defunding Planned Parenthood, millions of people’s access to sexual health care would be compromised. This would cause unplanned births and even backalley abortions to rise, harming women. After all, it is the government’s responsibility to offer women the opportunity to make their choice and go about it in a safe manner, regardless of other’s beliefs.
America already lacks sexual education in schools, defunding one of the most integral programs that provides females with appropriate services greatly deters our generation. Being targeted and defunded purely because of one service that faces political dispute is unethical and harmful to our society.
