Produced by Lucasfilm, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is the eagerly anticipated film coming to theaters on December 15. The film takes place in a galaxy far, far away, before the original “Star Wars” series and shortly after the galactic Empire came together.
The movie focuses on a rebel group assigned to steal the design plans for the Death Star, a mega weapon capable of harnessing enormous power and destruction. Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), is a skillful young woman who shows her immense ambition to create a brighter future by joining the rebel mission. She fights along with Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), a Rebel Alliance Intelligence Officer.
Due to its introduction of completely new characters and plot lines, this intergalactic film is garnering a lot of attention and criticism before its release. Many dedicated fans believe that with every new movie, the “Star Wars” series is slowly losing its authenticity and original story line. However, at the same time, many are looking forward to the arrival of the film as it is still part of a beloved franchise.
This film has high expectations to meet; if it fails, it may taint the reputation of the “Star Wars” legacy, ultimately creating doubts about the transition from the original films to the new films.
“It is a little concerning. Part of the reason why ‘Star Wars’ is so famous [is] because of the star characters. A lot of the concern is that it will lose its meaning. I think those fears were put to test with the last movie. As long as they don’t deviate too much, I believe they will stay true to what ‘Star Wars’ is,” junior and “Star Wars” enthusiast Nadia Vargas said.
Many people grew up with these films as part of their childhood and youth; therefore, it will be a challenge for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” to match the expectations set in their earlier years.
On the other hand, some fans disagree. They see past the nostalgia of the original movies and focus on the bigger picture.
“Personally, I like the continuation of the original story line. I enjoyed the new movie this past summer. It made me feel like a kid again. As for the new one, it will be like the comic book movie franchise. Some will be good and some will not,” English teacher Mathew Arnold said.
If you enjoy action-packed adventures filled with elegant accents, intergalactic designs, and plots that will leave you hanging off the edge of your seat, make sure to watch “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Do not worry, it will not leave you luke-warm.
