The Oscars was a night full of excitement, and it all went on without a host. Producers hoped this decision would help to keep the event at three hours after Kevin Hart stepped down as the host. The event was filled with surprises; one of the biggest shocks of the night was that “Green Book” won Best Picture, a surprise to many as the film was quite controversial. The film’s Mahershala Ali took home Best Supporting Actor, and it also won best original screenplay. Most had expected “Roma” to win Best Picture, but the director, Alfonso Cuarón, still walked away with Best Director, Best Foreign Language film, and Best Cinematography.
Olivia Colman won Best Actress in another shocking turn, when many thought either Glenn Close or Lady Gaga would take the award home. It was a big night for “Bohemian Rhapsody,” winning the most awards with Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, and Rami Malek as Best Actor. Many said they felt the event needed a host, and wondered why Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, and Amy Poehler didn’t, as they were the ones who opened the show. Pairs Spike Lee, Samuel L. Jackson and Melissa McCarthy, Brian Tyree Henry added a lot of humor to the night as well. Greg Cannom, Kate Biscoe and Patricia DeHaney of “Vice” fumbled during the possibly worst speech of the night after winning best makeup and hairstyling.
Another popular part of the event was Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s performance of the original “Shallow” from “A Star is Born.” Other performances included Jennifer Hudson’s ballad “I’ll Fight” and from “RBG” and “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” performed by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings.
The night overall was not a disaster, which is more than can be said of previous shows. There was a great list of presenters and the event featured amazing musical performances by great artists. It was full of laughs, disappointments, but also fantastic wins.
