As the season changes from summer to fall, the impending college application season looms on the horizon. For high school seniors, this period is fraught with enormous amounts of stress as they balance both finals and college applications that are just weeks away from being due. The overwhelming anticipation of gaining acceptance into their dream colleges can make the stress particularly demanding for seniors.

“It is very difficult to stay on track at this time of year,” senior Deonna Rane said. “College applications have made me very stressed, but I am making sure to space out my time correctly and hope for the best.”

Despite the challenges that come with college applications and decisions, Granada Hills Charter (GHC) seniors have strategies they employ to cope with the stress of college, potentially increasing their chances of getting accepted as a result.

Many GHC seniors prioritize efficient time management, allowing them to review and finish their college applications in a timely manner. Students can schedule an appointment with their college counselors over email to discuss potential college and career options as well as how to manage applications. This is yet another strategy and valuable support, allowing students to cope with the stress.

As graduation approaches, students face additional pressures to diligently work to meet the graduation requirements needed to walk onstage. This includes clearing detention hours, studying to earn a passing grade, and taking intersession courses to retake any D’s or F’s.

With both UC and Cal State applications due near the end of November, it is important to proactively tackle the senior to-do list. Here are some tips to help keep you on track:

Start by creating a checklist. Break down tasks into smaller, manageable steps, like drafting your essays, gathering recommendation letters, and filling out transcripts.

Set realistic goals for each day, and celebrate your progress along the way.

To ward off procrastination, seniors should allocate specific time slots to work on applications.

Employing methods of organization such as calendars, planners, or apps, can help to keep track of important dates and deadlines.

Seek assistance from teachers, friends, or family if you’re stuck on an essay or unsure about any step.

Lastly, take breaks to relax and recharge. Rest is essential for maintaining focus and motivation. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey, and with some smart time management, you’ll be done before you know it.
