Laufey is an Icelandic-Chinese singer and songwriter who caught everyone’s attention during the pandemic in 2020. She first gained popularity from TikTok, posting videos that amassed over two million views. Listeners gravitated towards her music as it had a unique modern jazz quality.
“She makes the most beautiful music and her songs touch my heart,” senior Sazin Khan said.
Laufey was practically raised alongside music as her grandfather was a violin professor who introduced her to the art by gifting her a violin. Additionally, her mother is a violinist who has performed with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra since 1988.
She is a multi-instrumentalist who can play the piano, guitar, violin, and cello. The themes of her mellow jazz-pop songs are young love, heartbreak, and finding yourself.
All of her songs are based on her personal experiences throughout her life whether that is having a crush or going through a heartbreak.
Her fans seem to love her meaningful songs that touch their hearts like no other artist does.
On September 16, Laufey performed live with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the last stop of her “Bewitched” tour. Fans were blown away as they were able to hear her angelic voice in person.
“The concert was amazing and an amazing experience,” senior Matthew Herrera said. “The vibe she gives off is just new, fresh, and warm.”
Although the tour is now over, she recently announced that she will start touring again in February 2024.
Laufey’s popularity has grown massively due to both her TikToks and tours as she was recently nominated for a Grammy for her album, Bewitched. Impressively, on September 8, her album secured a world record as the biggest debut for jazz in Spotify history.
Laufey will be on tour next year in 13 different countries and fans cannot wait to see what she has in store.
