Revolutionary Steps, also known as Rev Steps, is a student-led dance group that is loved for its fun, easygoing vibe, and ability to provide a space for students with different talents and backgrounds to share their unique style. Their charisma and coordination are admirable and always fill students with school spirit.
Rev Steps is currently recruiting new members. Captains and seniors Jasmine Mondares and Justina Estur encourage students to try out and join the dance community as everyone has different strengths and techniques of dancing to share.
“We saw a lot of people with unique and new talents, and we are so proud of those who came to try out,” Estur said. “Even to those who didn’t make it, I am so grateful they did their best and took the time to show up.”
Mondares and Estur have been a part of Rev Steps since their sophomore year and love the community they have built since then. Rev Steps is a community that focuses on self-expression and confidence.
“I started dancing through Rev Steps and have built self-confidence off of it,” Mondares said. “I can look over my progress these past few years and see that I have improved a lot, which I’m proud of.”
Mondares and Estur focus on choreographing, formations, staging, handling their social media accounts, giving tips and advice, and designing costumes. They do their best to advertise their group and spread the excitement and passion they have for dancing.
The captains are also dedicated to helping each member improve his or her dancing abilities. During practices, the captains showcase the dance they want to teach and then proceed to record themselves to look for mistakes and address what needs to be corrected. Everyone makes mistakes, and the captains ensure that their group learns and improves from them.
The supportive and family-like atmosphere of Rev Steps is one of its defining qualities. The group truly shines when it comes to boosting each other up. They are not afraid or embarrassed to ask each other questions on how to be a better dancer. This helps members to be consistent and build their skills.
“We try to organize potlucks or eat out after a performance as team bonding,” Mondares said. “We like spending time outside of dance practice or school.”
Rev Steps is a wonderful opportunity for Granada Hills Charter (GHC) students to be involved in the school community and build their confidence.
“Before Rev Steps, I had never joined a dance crew, but when I joined Rev Steps, I came to enjoy hip hop and now it is my favorite dance style,” senior Camila Bello said.
Bello now has developed a passion for dancing because of Rev Steps. She even sees herself continuing this passion in college. Bello was able to overcome her nervousness by having fun with her group mates and expressing herself through her movements and dancing.
Rev Steps members build up the school spirit for GHC students and show their personality through their dance moves. With the feeling of belonging and togetherness, they encourage other Granada students to be a part of the community.
Captains Monderas and Estur are excited to announce an upcoming Rev Steps dance performance on October 2 for Spirit Week. They hope to see the student population on the quad cheering them on and dancing along.
