There is no better way to bring students together than through art, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the After Hours Activities (AHA) new bagpipe and drum class. Filled with creativity, entertainment, and cheerfulness, this club welcomes students to share their talent and learn together as a community.

In this after-school class, students learn about Scottish snare drumming, tenor drumming, bass drumming, and bagpiping.

As a class, they discuss the history, cultural significance, and styles of Scottish drumming. Students get the chance to read scores, musical notes, and fully understand the expression of Scottish musical idioms.

Vanessa Torres, founder of AHA’s bagpipe and drum class, encourages students to join regardless of their skills in drumming. Torres is eager to expand the group and introduce even more students to new instruments.

“AHA is eager to welcome new members,” Torres said. “I look forward to meeting new people and seeing what they have to bring to the table. It’s exciting to see new faces this year and be able to teach a diverse group of students about music.”

Since our school mascot is Scottish, this is a unique opportunity to get to know the cultural background that makes up so much of our school identity.

“So far, we are learning how to read notes and how to use different kinds of sticks,” freshman Amrith Kumar said. “I have no experience playing drums, but my instructor has helped me and my new friends. As long as you pay attention, you’re good.”

No experience is required when joining AHA’s club. Club members are encouraged to listen carefully to their instructor and cooperate with one another to develop a clear understanding of how to play their instruments.

There are three instructors who help students in groups, some inside the classroom and some outside on the lunch tables, depending on which instrument they are playing.

“I see this club as a way of taking a break from school,” Kumar said. “I have plenty of free time, and I enjoy my time spent in this club.”

Art is for everyone, and this club welcomes students to enjoy Scottish drums and bagpipes. If you are looking for a club filled with fun activities, this club is for you. If you are interested in joining AHA’s bagpipe and drum class, stop by the library after sixth period and speak with Torres.
