Our Granada Hills Charter (GHC) competition cheer team won 1st place in their debut California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) competition on January 18th, competing for the first time in the COED small class division, at the Roybal Learning Center. They continued their success by placing third at the CIF State Championships on February 1, 2025, at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach.

During the CIF LA City Section Cheer Champions, they competed against eight other schools, including Venice High School, who placed 2nd, and San Pedro High School, who placed third.

This year, the team transitioned to the COED Small Varsity division, where both male and female athletes compete together following the addition of co-captain Brian Wason. With this change,  they had to master new skills, such as single or double-based stunts.

Coach Lauren Feldman and assistant coach Kaitlyn Silver led the varsity cheer team to victory with their passion, hard work, and strong bond with the athletes. Their efforts resulted in an energetic and winning performance, marking their first time winning a title for GHCHS.

“Every single team member’s commitment played a vital role in getting us to where we are today,” said Coach Feldman. “I am beyond grateful to each one of them for their hard work and support.

Despite their victory, this year’s journey to first place was different from the previous years. The recent California fires led to a State of Emergency, which created uncertainties on the path to city and state finals.

“Having only one practice before such an important event, we had no idea what to expect,” senior varsity captain Jasmine Chien said. “Luckily, we were all able to quickly come together and put out a routine we were happy with.

Once the announcement was made, the room erupted with excitement. Not only did they win first place, but they were also awarded CIF rings, indicating their victory, alongside medals.

“Placing first place at this competition was incredibly exciting for me and the team,” said Chien. “We knew that there was some tough competition, but as soon as we heard the announcer say we won, we immediately jumped for joy, feeling so proud of everyone.

As the cheer season comes to an end, many team members will be competing with GHCHS for the last time. The competition team consists of 10 seniors, 11 juniors, 2 sophomores, and 2 freshmen.

“For state, I was definitely more excited and emotional because I felt like we knew we deserved to be there,” junior Sophie Leguellec said. “It was the last competition we would ever compete with that specific team. Knowing that this was our last chance made me want to give my all and just put my heart out on the mat.”

Ending the season off on a high note, even greater achievements are anticipated for the cheer team next year.

“Our plan moving forward is to keep building confidence in our routine while embracing and enjoying the process!” Feldman said. “Of course, we’re keeping our strategies under wraps for now—no spoilers just yet!”
