Many students at Granada Hills Charter (GHC) use the social media app TikTok to connect with people who share their interests, engaging with videos they deem interesting. Sophomore Sarah Marmol takes this a bit farther, using her TikTok page to showcase her love for fashion.

Since starting her account, Marmol has amassed over 270,000 followers and 23 million likes on the platform. Whether it be a video showcasing an outfit or talking about a popular movie, Marmol has reached large audiences across the world, all brought together through her entertaining content. Her videos have gained the attention of popular artists and games, with some of her videos being reposted by indie pop artist Beabadoobee and the account of the popular Roblox game “Fashion Famous.”

Marmol’s large presence on TikTok has provided her with the opportunity to try her hand in marketing and business. Through expressing her love for fashion, Marmol has collaborated with several popular fashion brands such as Aelfric Eden and Motel Rocks, advertising their clothing on her page. Disney even used one of her videos to promote the “Mufasa: The Lion King” live action movie which was released in December.

Marmol first began making TikTok videos during the pandemic, with her initial content centering around art. Her posts consisted of several drawings and paintings. Her old art account garnered over 450,000 followers, before it unfortunately was deleted. Needing to start over on a new page did not sway Marmol, as it only inspired her to grow back up from the bottom.

“I noticed my account taking off when I started to show more of my personality and when I was able to express myself more with fashion,” Marmol said. “From this point, I skyrocketed and was able to grow a lot as an influencer. Since TikTok opened so many doors for me, I will truly be grateful for every opportunity my platform has given me.”

Although the nature of her content has evolved since then, Marmol still occasionally posts her art, her art skills evolving alongside her online journey.

When not posting on TikTok, Marmol also ventures into other crafts. Serving as a delegate of GHC’s Associated Student Body (ASB), Marmol also participates in Speech and Debate, where she placed 14th in California for her signature event, Original Prose and Poetry. However, TikTok will always serve as a way to relax from her many responsibilities and allow her to explore her interests outside of school.

“I get to express myself through clothes and my extroverted personality,” Marmol said. “TikTok is definitely a place where I can be my true self without restrictions. I create relatable content surrounding my interests, such as video games and music artists, and I get to connect with friendly communities who share the same hobbies.”
