On Thursday, February 27, Granada Hills Charter’s (GHC) staff and students faced off on the court during the annual student versus staff basketball game that is hosted by the Associated Student Body (ASB). The staff won the game 80-52, and the staff remained the undefeated champions.
The students boasted a roster of 15 seniors, coached by senior Kathy Artiga and the staff had a roster of 12 members coached by physical education teacher Robert Palafox.
At the start of the game, the students and staff each walked into the large gym with their theme songs playing. Each of the teams ran through the banners that ASB had created for them while warming up for the game.
During the first quarter, the staff were consistently scoring, while the students still had not scored a point. However, by the end of the quarter the students had gained some momentum, and were able to close the gap by 10 points.
“It was really scary when the staff got off to a great start; but once we finally started scoring, the whole team got loud and excited,” senior Nicholas Shane said. “It brought a new energy to the game and created a sense of excitement as we each wanted to score for ourselves. Ultimately, although the game may have been a blowout, it was still such an exciting experience that provided a great opportunity to have some fun with my friends.”
The halftime show featured a performance by the GHC Dance Team, who sported basketball jerseys for the routine. The halftime show also featured a promposal and a half court competition.
Throughout the second half of the game, the staff managed to move ahead, working their way to a 30 point lead over the students.
“I think the Student versus Staff basketball game was a great opportunity to have some friendly competition,” senior Evan Shin said. “We thought we had enough to end the staff’s streak but it was a fun experience nonetheless.”
