Coming off an incredible season last year, the boys tennis team aims to repeat their success. Last season, they achieved an impressive undefeated league record, narrowly falling short at the league finals against Palisades Charter High School.

This season, the team has showcased thrilling and impressive performances, contributing to their current undefeated league season.

One standout game was a home match against Birmingham High School. The opponents utilized a strategy called stacking, where they appointed their strongest players to the doubles teams. However, the boys tennis team countered with a strong performance, maintaining their momentum throughout the match. By not falling short in teamwork and precision in a single match, they were able to accomplish a clean sweep, winning every game.

Not every match concluded in smooth sailing victories. During an away game against Taft High School, it seemed like the boys tennis team was going to receive their first loss. Before the final two matches, a doubles and singles game, the team was down 2-3. While the doubles players fought hard for a win, the singles match became the deciding factor. Senior Christian Camarillo displayed an incredible comeback after losing the first set, taking the game into tiebreakers. With his determination, he won the tiebreaker 10-4, securing the victory comeback for the team.

Determined to match their previous accomplishments, the team approaches each practice with relentless focus and dedication. They train for an hour and a half, four days a week,  working tirelessly to improve on all key aspects of their game, including forehand and backhand strokes, volleys, and serves.

The boys tennis team consists of four singles players and six doubles players. Their matches consist of a mix of singles and doubles games, and those who win the most rounds emerge victorious.

Beyond their competitive spirit and impressive set of skills, the team’s chemistry has been a defining factor to their success. Bonding activities like post-game meals have helped to create a family-like atmosphere.

“I think that the most important factor of our success is just our support for each other,” junior Ashton Park said. “Tennis is a mind game and no matter how much we are up or down, the encouragement of each other is what helps us through the games. It really is amazing to have a team that supports and encourages you no matter what the current situation is.”

With continuous hard work and dedication, the boys tennis team aims to maintain this undefeated streak this season. As the season progresses, the team hopes to improve their skills and rely on each other’s support to stay motivated and focused.
