Trends come and go quickly, but one that continues to dominate 2025 is streaks. Both Snapchat and TikTok have adopted this concept, encouraging users to engage with each other by sending daily funny or relatable videos or pictures.

A streak is created when two people send something back and forth every day without missing a day. It’s a simple idea that turns something continuous into connection, and sometimes competition.

Snapchat, originally designed to capture memories with fun filters, shows a tiny hourglass icon when time is running out to keep a streak alive. TikTok, known for its short videos, recently introduced a similar feature with its burning flame that fades when a streak is about to expire.

Although both apps offer the same basic challenge, users are split on which version is better. Many think TikTok streaks are better because it allows for more personal and expressive content.

“TikTok streaks help you feel more connected with people because the videos sent through TikTok are typically way more personal to you than Snapchat streaks,” senior Nia Martinez said.

Sophomore Valeria Alvarez agrees.

“TikTok format is way better than Snapchat since it allows me to share my humor to help connect me and my friends,” Alvarez said. “Although Snapchat has funny filters to send streaks to, who doesn’t like a 15 second video of something funny?”

Still others stand by Snapchat’s classic version. They appreciate that it creates some commitment to friends and family, which could easily turn into a contest.

“Snapchat streaks make me feel closer to my friends because they could update me by sending me pictures of their everyday activities or what they are doing,” senior Nicolette Nahabedian said. It feels like I’m involved in their everyday life even though I’m not always with them.”

Whether you’re Team Tiktok or Team Snapchat, streaks have become more than just a trend. They are an opportunity to either create more connections with friends and family. They are also a reflection of how social media continues to shape how we connect in 2025.
