New features have been implemented into the broadcast and radio programs of Granada Hills Charter (GHC), allowing students to have their voices heard on campus.
The Good Vibes Hotline, which is a program that stemmed from the broadcasting class, allows students to spread positivity and enlighten the school communities with their “good vibes.” Once a week on the quad, students can approach the yellow phone and answer the given prompt to be a part of an episode that is posted on the GHC Instagram account.
They are able to share a positive anecdote about life at GHC or as a teenager in general. The first yellow phone prompt students were asked was, “What’s one personal strength that will help you accomplish your goals and succeed this year?”
A variety of students approached with inspiring responses such as: their social skills, finding peace in themselves, and time management. This first addition of the Good Vibes Hotline showed a new and encouraging energy for the campus.
“I think it gives students an opportunity to share personal answers,” co-founder and senior Angelina Lau said. “It allows them to be vulnerable, and that’s important in a school setting because it is a reminder that everybody is human.”
In addition to broadcasting, GHC offers a student-hosted radio class that features their show The Hills FM. The students play a variety of songs and feature different talking segments. It airs each Tuesday, providing students with a soundtrack for their school day.
Now, listeners have the ability to send in recorded Voice Notes through a Google form and hear their voice live on the radio. In this new project, students can submit recorded responses to prompts, such as who their role model is, a shout out to a teacher or friend.
With their commitment to student involvement and opinion, both of these student led initiatives have created opportunities for involvement and community on campus, helping students get their voices heard, literally.
