Teamwork is often the difference between a group of players and a successful program. For the Granada Hills Charter (GHC) varsity boys basketball team, that unity has been key to their growth this season.
After falling to Fresno Christian High School in the 2025 CIF State Boys Basketball Championship, the Highlanders entered the season determined to improve. That determination has paid off. Heading into postseason play, GHC holds an overall record of 16-11 and a 5-5 league record in the competitive West Valley League.
Support and encouragement have become central to the GHC team’s identity. Players emphasized that lifting each other up has helped strengthen both their confidence and performance on the court.
“We have to encourage our teammates to do their best,” junior Michael Kederian said. “Even if they aren’t doing their best we have to lift them up. This allows more motivation and support for the team.”
Communication between players and coaches has also played a big role in the team’s progress. From in-game adjustments to individual feedback, clear communication from teammates and coaches has helped the team stay focused. One of the ways that Coach Joseph Bent communicates is by having the team create code words and different signals to allow for players to understand the different factors in the game.
“Coach Bent instills confidence in his players by giving us individual breakdowns on what we do well and what we need to improve,” junior Jaysen Zaragoza said. “He gives us a lot of praise, which really helps.”
The Highlanders closed the regular season strong, earning a 58-48 win over Chatsworth High School on February 6, a victory that highlighted both their defensive effort and composure during close games.
Rival matchups continue to fuel the team’s competitive edge, particularly against John F. Kennedy High School.
“I was excited to go against Kennedy because they are our rivals. It felt good to beat them,” junior Jacob Bautista said. When we go against the best teams in our league it pushes us to do our best.”
GHC now looks ahead to postseason competition, preparing to face Bernstein High School in the LA City Section Championships on February 11. As the season continues, the Highlanders prove that growth, communication, and teamwork remain at the core of their success.
