After spending the entire fall semester preparing for the season, the boys varsity soccer team entered competition focused and determined. Head Coach Armas runs intense and disciplined practices, pushing his players to improve and holding them to high standards.
February 4 marked a highly anticipated matchup against El Camino Real High School, and an even more meaningful occasion: Senior Night. The event honored the team’s graduating players and celebrated their dedication to the program. Underclassmen were especially motivated to make the evening memorable for their teammates playing their final home game.
“We entered the game with a lot of energy mostly because we know that the seniors are leaving.” junior Adrian Cervantes said. “We wanted them to have a good signing off.”
The match itself was hard-fought. El Camino ultimately secured a narrow 1-0 victory. Although the result was not what the team hoped for, the game reflected the effort and determination the GHC players showed all season.
For many seniors, the night marked their final time stepping onto the Highlander field in their GHC uniforms. Surrounded by friends and family, they were recognized for their commitment and accomplishments throughout their high school careers.
“I was definitely supported by my friends and family throughout the season,” senior Jared Sanchez said. “My teammates also helped me keep my head held high and helped me get back up, That’s what teammates are for.”
Senior Night also left a lasting impact on the underclassmen. The GHC boys varsity program emphasizes support and unity, helping younger players build confidence and set goals for the 2026-2027 season.
“Honestly the support from the team has been the best,” junior Andrew Nunez said. “The people on the team are funny, kind, and caring. It makes the game a lot more fun and allows me to cherish the time we had together.”
Soccer brings both challenges and triumphs, lessons that extend beyond the field.
“You have to find a way to strive through the negativity,” Sanchez said. “It’s always going to be there no matter what; not just in soccer but everyday life.”
As the season comes to a close, the team bids farewell to its seniors while looking ahead. With a strong foundation of support and tradition, the next generation of GHC varsity soccer players are ready to carry the team forward.
