The Associated Student Body (ASB) elections concluded on March 6, officially determining next year’s cabinet members including president and vice president. Held every second semester, the elections are often highly anticipated.
This year saw junior Audrey Choi elected as ASB President and Ian Chen elected as ASB Vice President.
“Election week was so stressful for everyone running, and everyone put forth their best efforts,” Chen said. “As many of us went into the run-off election, we knew we had to keep working diligently to promote ourselves and prove to the student body why we were capable.”
Running for office is no easy task, especially when trying to appeal to peers who can often be the harshest critics. ASB members are not only representing themselves, but also the thousands of students who make up the Granada Hills Charter (GHC) community.
“Some of my goals for ASB include encouraging all students to be able to have a say, whether it’s a proposed event or proposing change to an administrative level,” Chen said.
With such a large student population, creating opportunities for students to feel represented can be challenging. However, Chen hopes the new cabinet will help make sure that every student feels heard and included.
“One of my main goals is to shape ASB into a class of dedicated, self-driven, and motivated student leaders who are ready to provide for the student body,” Choi said.
Choi explained that during her years in ASB, she began to see the group as a family more than a class. She hopes to continue this camaraderie during her presidency.
Choi also encourages students to become more involved in school events and activities.
“Although ASB can do their part by focusing on ways to incentivize Highlanders, I think it really requires everyone’s collective input for true change on campus,” Choi said.
She believes school spirit and community involvement depend on students actively participating and supporting one another.
Choi said she focused her campaign on connecting personally with students across campus. She also emphasized that her success would not have been possible without the support of her family, friends, and peers.
Overall, this year’s ASB election highlighted the passion and hard work of the students striving to make a difference at GHC. Through the leadership of Choi, Chen and the rest of the cabinet, students can look forward to another year focused on school spirit and community involvement.
