Lady Gaga’s meat dress, Kanye West’s interruption of Taylor Swift’s award speech, and Beyonce’s pregnancy reveal are only some of the iconic pop culture moments that the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) have produced. The VMAs are notorious for their unscripted drama and their commitment to celebrate music in its fabulous chaos. However, as the media has adopted cancel culture into its ideals, celebrities and famous media figures alike have prioritized their self-image over authentic moments, causing what was once a pop culture essential to fall flat.

The VMAs have a long history in the pop culture space. The first VMAs took place on September 14, 1984, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. It was hosted by Canadian-American actor Dan Aykroyd and Grammy award-winning singer Bette Midler. The VMA’s biggest award and top honor is “Video of the Year” which was first won by The Cars for their song “You Might Think.” Other big winners of the night included Herbie Hancock and Michael Jackson.

As they evolved and grew in popularity, the VMAs began to clearly stand out next to other typical award shows. Where award shows such as the Grammys and the Oscars emphasize prestige and glamor, the VMAs were chaotic from the start.

From the very first show, people don’t remember who won the award but who was a part of the biggest scandal of the night. The most memorable moment of the 1984 show was Madonna’s wedding dress slip up during her performance of “Like a Virgin” where her fall caused her underwear to be visible to the entire world. This mishap set the precedent for the VMA’s trademark: iconic and unpredictable moments that are talked about long after the awards are given out.

The VMAs continued to be a pop culture powerhouse for decades to come. From iconic performances such as Britney Spear’s jungle performance to Lady Gaga’s bloody rendition of “Paparazzi,” and famous feuds such as Nicki Minaj vs Miley Cyrus and Kanye West vs Taylor Swift. The award show’s track record for messy drama unfolding was strong, however, the VMAs today cannot say the same.

The 2026 VMAs were drastically different from earlier shows. Madonna and Taylor Swift were among the night’s biggest winners, but the show failed to offer any unexpected moments that could overshadow the awards. In fact, one of Swift’s award speeches included a world premiere of her new single “Patient Zero” from the deluxe version of her 2025 album “The Life Of A Showgirl.”

This became controversial to viewers at home as she was receiving the “Artist Director Honor Award,” an award that had not been given out prior. This led to claims of Swift forcing the VMAs to fabricate the award in order for her music video debut. When the biggest drama of the VMAs becomes centered around production rather than celebrities, the decrease in pop culture relevance is evident.

“The Artist Director Honor really is an extension of [Video] Vanguard [Award],” VMAs executive producer Bruce Gillmer said according to Forbes. “And in many ways, even larger in stature because it was an idea that, quite frankly, the kernel of the idea came from external. I’ll leave it at that.”

Even though the 2026 VMAs lacked legitimate drama, there were still some significant highlights. Thai singer LISA debuted her song “SaWaDiKa” on the stage with complex choreography, while British singer-songwriter “Raye” delivered impressive vocals during “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!” Country singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves also paid tribute to the late icon Dolly Parton by delivering a beautiful performance of “I Will Always Love You.” The night was produced exceptionally well, but viewers don’t want spectacle, they crave theatrics, which the 2026 VMAs lacked.

The MTV VMAs has seemingly traded exciting spontaneity for a polished regime. Cancel culture may be one explanation for that caution, although a quieter show alone cannot prove that celebrities are afraid to be themselves. The greatest concern is when protecting reputation takes priority over creativity and authenticity. Celebrities are allowed to be cordial at public events, but should also make room for unexpected moments. Without the element of surprise, the MTV VMAs will be destined to join the long list of award shows that emphasizes trophies over the stars.
