San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission supports community

By Delaney Dilzer

Over the span of 40 years, the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission has been built to help people in the San Fernando Valley. The mission is a Christian-based non-profit organization that was established as an outreach for the ministry of the Rescue Mission Alliance.

Founded in 1998, the mission began as the Rescue Survival Outreach Services, or the S.O.S. Program, to help feed the homeless. By 2002, the mission had collaborated with churches in the area in order to provide meals and shelter to the homeless living in the Valley. The program has now expanded and provides homeless men, women, children, and families with the basic necessities of life. Not only does it give them a way to obtain food, shelter, and water, but it also gives the families an opportunity to turn their lives around.

The program allows the families to live at the mission for 90 days with a strict schedule. They must wake up every morning at 5:00 a.m. to eat breakfast and then go to either work or school and they are not allowed back in the house until 3:00 p.m. They eat dinner every night at 6:00 p.m. sharp and then they have chores until 8:00 p.m. Since the mission is a Christian organization, every night at 8:00 pm they have prayer and devotions. Finally, they must be in bed with lights out by 9:00 p.m. The mission keeps this schedule for them in order to provide a good foundation for individual and family restoration. The volunteers help the families develop a personalized plan based on their needs for achieving personal growth such as finding a job or getting a house.

There are many churches who help the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission. For example, every other Wednesday night a youth group from Shepherd of the Hills Church helps the children with dinner and their devotions. The churches also have organizations which help raise money for the mission to help out the families living there.

The San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission has the support of the community since they provide them with refuge, recovery, and restoration. The mission accepts donations due to the fact that they help people in need while giving them a chance to make them and their family better and happier. People are able to donate food, money, clothes, or household items through the mail. For more information about how to donate or how to volunteer, go to their website at
