Uganda plans to compete in the 2027 Invictus Games after briefly withdrawing over concerns about how its participation might be viewed by King Charles III.

Inspired by the Warrior Games and the Paralympics. Prince Harry created the Invictus Games to support British wounded soldiers in 2014. Since then, the Invictus games have extended past just the United Kingdom to include 26 countries from the rest of Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia.

Uganda joined that community in 2026 as the 26th nation. Its team is expected to make its Games debut in Birmingham, England next year. Uganda’s minister for defense and veteran affairs has since affirmed that the country will complete.

The confusion followed renewed attention to Harry and Meghan’s position within the royal family.

However, Harry faced both family and public backlash after marrying Meghan Markle in 2018. This led to their pulling away from their royal duties and eventually being declared Independent citizens at the Sandringham Summit.  It was decreed that they were unable to use the titles “His and Her Royal Highness” for business purposes.

Even after that separation and a move to the United States, there have been controversies over the years including a standing lawsuit against tabloid publishers. After winning that lawsuit, Prince Harry and Meghan returned to England, but as Individual Citizens with no privileges from the crown.

This attempt to clear the royal family’s name reminded nations participating in the Invictus Games that Henry and Meghan are not royals so these games are not technically run by the royal family. One of those countries, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba of Uganda, posted an official statement on X stating “In order not to be construed as being opposed to His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom, whom we deeply revere, Uganda hereby withdraws from the Invictus Games.”

Other countries who participate have been hesitant to do so recently due to similar reasons as Uganda. This unfortunate turn of events has shown countries desperate attempts to maintain image in today’s culture.

For a short time, Uganda’s withdrawal put the distinction between Harry and the royal family at the center of a sports competition meant to serve veterans. Its return means the country’s competitors can continue preparing for Birmingham. The episode also shows how easily attention can shift from the people the Games were created for to the public figures associated with them.
